Activity 19.4.3 – Comparing and contrasting natural disasters
Earth scientists study disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes (cyclones, typhoons), tornados, volcanoes, floods, and drought. Table 19.11 lists the thirty worst natural disasters of the twentieth century. Database.
(1) Of the events listed, which type of disaster caused the greatest loss of life in the twentieth century? To determine this, perform an ascending sort on the type of disaster, then perform a subtotal/sum after each group of disasters to calculate the loss of life from each.
(2) Which countries suffered most from natural disasters in the twentieth century? Perform an ascending sort on the country and a subtotal/sum on deaths, grouping by country, to calculate the loss of life per country.
