Faculty Collective-Frankie Augustin

Frankie AugustinFrankline (Frankie) Augustin is an Assistant Professor in the Health Administration Program at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Frankie’s research concentrates on the professional development and competencies of health administration students and health administration professionals with a focus on 3 streams: attitudes about the elderly, cultural competency, and spirituality within the workplace.  Her most current coeration Senior Enrichment Center where her service learning health administration students are reworking the outdated curriculum for Type 2 diabetes prevention for the elderly.  Under the direction of the ONEgeneration leadership, students have reviewed evidence based research that suggests that the current prescriptive model does not effectively control Type 2 diabetes; a more hands-on and direct experiential approach to nutrition, exercise, and diet is what stimulates behavioral/lifestyle change, controls Type 2 diabetes and often eliminates it. Health administration students who participate in this project provide much needed administrative assistance to the ONEgeneration leadership, and work collaboratively with the CSUN Department of Kinesiology and the CSUN Department of Family & Consumer Sciences to program plan, organize, direct, coordinate and execute the project, all of which are essential functions of health care management and leadership.  In addition to building writing, verbal and analytical skills, students who participate learn that access to and quality of elder care services are income-dependent; they learn how to further develop their interpersonal workplace skills;  they become aware of their own emotional intelligence; and they learn to develop a more empathetic attitude towards the elderly.
