University Student Union’s Pride Center Celebrates CSUN Trans* Community with “Trans* Awareness Week”

October 30, 2017

Northridge — The Pride Center of the University Student Union (USU) invites all CSUN students, faculty and staff to attend a vibrant and compelling series of artistic workshops and thought-provoking activities during “Trans* Awareness Week” at the USU. From Monday, Nov. 13 to Monday, Nov. 20, come and participate in this special celebration of the CSUN Trans* Community featuring movie screenings, lectures, workshops, a variety show and more – all completely FREE.

“I feel empowered,” said Pride Center Student Assistant Tyler Neroes. “It's amazing to see so many accurate representations of the trans* community for this year's Trans Awareness Week, especially in the San Fernando Valley."

Dance your way into the fun of “Trans* Awareness Week” on Monday, Nov. 14 with the QT* Dance Party and Resource Fair from noon to 2 p.m. All are welcome to the Plaza del Sol at the USU and learn about the great on-campus and local trans* related resources while busting a move to some great music. From 2 to 4 p.m. in the USU Flintridge Room, “Trans* 101” will serve as crash course in learning about the trans* community and what it means to be genderqueer.

To wrap up Monday, come to the Northridge Center at the USU for a free film screening of the documentary “Becoming Johanna”, which follows the journey of a 16-year-old transgender Latina from the San Fernando Valley. There will be a Q&A with Johanna herself after the film.

On Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.,  there will be another edition of “Trans* 101” in the USU Flintridge Room. Then, a film screening of “Transgender at War and in Love” will take place at the Pride Center in the USU Sol Center from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. The film follows the challenges of a transgender military couple, Laila and Logan Ireland. Attendees can be a part of a Q&A with Laila herself after the film.

Another opportunity to attend “Trans* 101” will take place at the USU Pasadena Room from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. After the workshop, come to the Pride Center at 7 p.m. for a special documentary screening of “Transvisible: The Bamby Salcedo Story” featuring the extraordinary life of the activist and TransLatin@ Coalition founder. All are encouraged to stay after the film for a Q&A with Bamby.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, the final “Trans* 101” workshop of the week will take place in the Flintridge Room from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Then, the very entertaining “VarieT* Show,” hosted by trans* activist Ignacio Rivera, will take place in the Northridge Center from 5 to 8 p.m. to celebrate the remarkable artistry and talent within CSUN’s trans* community.

To wrap up the week’s events on Monday, Nov. 20, it will be a Transgender Day of Remembrance. In honor of this special day, the Pride Center will host a vigil from 7 to 9 p.m. in recognition of the trans* victims of hate crimes and assault over the past year.
