FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Experience a Dynamic Series of Virtual Workshops during “Trans* Empowerment Week” with the Pride Center

Northridge– The Pride Center of the University Student Union (USU) invites all Matadors to celebrate and support CSUN’s Trans* community during our virtual “Trans* Empowerment Week”. From Monday, Nov. 16 to Friday, Nov. 20., come enjoy an exciting weeklong series of fun community-building activities and educational workshops to raise awareness for our CSUN Trans* community. This is an opportunity for CSUN students to help create a welcoming online space with the Pride Center while making new friends and raising the visibility of transgender, gender-queer and gender non-conforming individuals.

“The Pride Center is very excited to offer important events like ‘Trans* Empowerment Week,’ that will empower the Trans* community and bring awareness to the campus,” said Sarina Loeb, Pride Center Manager. “We have a great series of entertaining and informative virtual workshops planned that will engage all attendees while they connect with more Matadors.”

To begin your “Trans* Empowerment Week”, you can attend the Trans* 101 workshop on Monday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. This workshop will teach you the appropriate terminology, inclusive language and ways to be an involved ally to the trans community. Monday evening enjoy a screening of the movie, “How to Make a Rainbow” with a Q&A by

Jade Pheonix Martinez, the producer of the film. It follows Jade on her journey throughout her transition, experiences with motherhood and relationship with her daughter, Aliazah, over two transformative years. Join both events over Zoom.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., you’ll have another opportunity to attend Trans* 101 over Zoom. Then discover valuable new resources at the Legal Name & Gender Clinic from 4 to 5 p.m. where folx can receive expert advice and practical help when it comes to filling out paperwork, paying fees and showing up to court for a legal name and/or gender change in California. Luna from LA LGBT Center will be joining us for these resourceful conversations.

On Wednesday, Nov. 18, step out of the binary with Deconstructing Gender from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. via Zoom and attend a virtual workshop analyzing the origins of gender pronouns, challenging imperialistic ideals and applying those concepts to your everyday life. Later that evening, you don’t want to miss our fabulous Instagram Live presentation of the Varie-T Show from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. where you can enjoy this fun trans-centric space for folx to share poems, personal stories and other forms of performance art.

Then, on Thursday, Nov. 19, if you missed the previous day’s Deconstructing Gender, you can catch up from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. with this compelling workshop. That afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. on Zoom, do a self check-in with the Know Thyself Workshop where you’ll create a toolkit to help you express personal experiences, trauma and adversity, as well as your dreams and aspirations with guest speaker Mandela Msanii guiding you through this virtual workshop.

To conclude the week, on Friday, Nov. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m., we’ll come together online as a community for the Trans* Day of Remembrance Vigil to honor the memories of trans* loved ones who have been taken by anti-trans violence, featuring a powerful slideshow sharing our condolences and support.

Make plans now to participate in this special week filled with inspiring and educational workshops with many opportunities to create new connections. For more information about “Trans* Empowerment Week”, please visit csun.edu/pride/tew or contact the Pride Center at .
