“Trans* Awareness Week” at the USU to Empower Students in the CSUN Trans* Community

Northridge- The Pride Center invites all students, faculty and staff to  attend a compelling series of unique workshops and activities during “Trans* Awareness Week” at the University Student Union. From Monday, Nov. 14 to Thursday, Nov. 17, come to the USU and participate in this special event featuring movie screenings, lectures, workshops and more – all completely FREE.

“The Pride Center is so excited to celebrate Trans* Awareness Week and highlight the lives and experiences of the trans* community,” said Pride Center Coordinator, Sarina Loeb. “Everything happening this week is to raise awareness of trans* related topics and provide useful tips for being a trans* ally while also providing some fun entertainment for all.”

“Trans* Awareness Week” will begin with a free film screening in the Pride Center on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. The featured film will be “Raising Zoey”, an excellent documentary that follows the transition of a young transgender girl named Zoey Luna. The screening will be directly followed by an in-person Q&A session with Zoey’s mother, Ofelia, at 8 p.m.

The rest of the week is a great opportunity for the CSUN community to better understand the trans* community and share in some fun activities while gaining insight on trans* related topics by attending workshops and lectures scheduled all week. On Monday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 15 at  2 p.m., “Trans* 101” in the Thousand Oaks Room and will serve as crash course in learning about the trans* community and what it means to be genderqueer. “Trans* 101: Trans Men” will be featured on Thursday, Nov.17 at 1 p.m. in the Panorama City Room of the East Conference Center to target the specific topic of trans* men and their experiences.

The week’s must-see special moment is “Bucking the System” on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m.  It will feature trans* adult film producer and motivational speaker Buck Angel in the Thousand Oaks Room. Angel will discuss the topic of sexuality and gender in our society, as well as his own personal experience transitioning from female to male and learning to accept himself and his body.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, another extremely influential trans* man, writer, public speaker and activist will give an innovative and thought-provoking talk at “A Lecture with Tiq Milan” in the Grand Salon. Milan will bring his insight and knowledge about the trans* experience in this presentation.

Two special events will wrap up the week on Thursday evening. First, an entertaining “VarieT Show” will take place in the Grand Salon from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to celebrate art and talent within CSUN’s trans* community.  Then at 8:30 p.m., the week will conclude with a powerful “Transgender Remembrance Ceremony” in the West Valley Room to honor the memory of deceased members of the trans* community. 

“Trans* Awareness Week” will also include an all day “TRANSform Fundraiser” at the Panda Express on Nordhoff Street, sponsored by Gamma Rho Lambda on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.  All proceeds will go toward helping the trans* community obtain additional resources.
