Nearly 80 CSUN journalism students received career advice from alumni at a speed-mentoring event on Oct. 2 at the Orange Grove Bistro.

The Journalism Alumni Association hosted the event, which featured about 25 professional mentors who offered students advice about working in digital and print media, broadcast, photojournalism and public relations.

“The session was very informative and a great way for students to get a realistic approach of what the industry is really like,” said Miracle Evans, a junior studying broadcast journalism. “The mentors advised us on key concepts necessary for success in the field, such as the importance of a good handshake and being comfortable when conducting an interview.”

The personal setting allowed students to ask the mentors about how to launch their careers. In a manner similar to a speed-dating, the students rotated between tables every 13 minutes.

“The idea was to provide students with the opportunity to meet professionals in the industry, ask questions and get a business card or two,” said Journalism Alumni Association President Bob Tarlau, class of 1965. “Most importantly, we want to help current students build an outreach network of professionals via mentorship and exposure.”

Tarlau said the alumni association will likely hold another session in the future.
