On Friday, March 9, CSUN's Department of Cinema and Television Arts will help launch the Comics and Visual Culture 2018 symposium by screening My Life as McDull (Mak Dau goo si, 2001), the hit animated feature from Hong Kong. Directed by former comics editor and toy designer Toe Yuen, and based on the beloved comic created by cartoonist Alice Mak and writer Brian Tse Lap-man, My Life as McDull tells a complex story in a deceptively simple-looking yet playful style. The film, suitable for all ages, depicts childhood in contemporary Hong Kong with a mix of absurdist humor, piercing social commentary, and heart-tugging poignancy. McDull is a mega-popular phenomenon, indeed an icon, of Hong Kong life, and this first film based on the comic was a roaring success, inspiring sequels and spin-offs.

The screening will take place in CTVA's Armer Theater, and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Film scholar David Desser, a specialist in Asian film, will introduce the film and place it in social and artistic contexts. This screening, organized by Prof. Frances Gateward of CTVA, resumes the Comics on Screen collaboration begun in 2015, and will provide an introduction to the Comics and Visual Culture symposium taking place the next day, Saturday, March 10, at the University Student Union. Comics@CSUN is proud to co-sponsor this event!
