Sigma Tau Delta Is BACK!

After a three-year hiatus, Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, is back at CSUN! In just two weeks, right before Spring Break, a new team of leaders succeeded in winning reactivation status with the national headquarters and also here on our campus, with University Recognition granted in record time. This new team of leaders is dynamic & diverse, inclusive of a broad range of race & ethnicity and sex & gender identities, including Latinx, Black, Armenian, trans & nonbinary Executive Board Officers, and also including a range of ages & academic levels. President Francesca Nardi, Vice President Kalan Cordell, Treasurer Lia Laughlin, Secretary Satik Hambardzumyan, Historian Tomas Gonzalez, Public Relations Officer René Zadoorian, Social Media Manager Giselle Renteria, and Student Advisor Ken Fales now wish to invite all qualified English Department majors & minors to join them in reviving this distinctive honor society, with membership in the CSUN Iota Chi Chapter, and to join them in restoring this student organization to a central role in our community. ALL qualified English majors & minors are welcome to join, including students at the undergraduate & graduate level and students in ALL academic program options, including Creative Writing, English Subject Matter, Honors, Literature, Popular Culture Studies, Rhetoric & Composition, and Writing & Rhetoric, plus FYI and JYI. To make membership more accessible for all students, the new team has lowered the one-time lifetime membership fee from $65 to $50 (with $45 required by national headquarters & with $5 directed to the campus chapter). Students are encouraged to act quickly to join this Spring, because membership can only be conferred to those currently enrolled at CSUN. Here’s the message & invitation from the new student leaders of Sigma Tau Delta Iota Chi:

Diversity and Equity Innovation Grant RFP

We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 Diversity & Equity Innovations Grant (DEIG) sponsored by the Office of the President and the Office of the Provost in conjunction with the President’s Commission on Diversity & Inclusion. The Diversity & Equity Innovation Grant was established to support educational projects, scholarly research, creative activities and other programmatic initiatives that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, access, anti-racism and social justice for the benefit of the CSUN community.

Proposals will be selected based on grant objectives, impact on the CSUN community, dissemination and assessment of results, and potential for successful continuation past the grant period. Projects clearly aligned to the CSUN Strategic Directions and priorities established in the 2022 Roadmap to the Future and demonstrating potential for broad institutional impact will be given special consideration. A full description of the grant can be found in the Call for Proposals. Grant applications are due by Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 11:59pm PST.

This year, the DEIG application process is earlier than usual. If you have applied before, you’ll also notice that the application is completely online and a budget document is already generated for you to submit with your application. Based on this new timeline and change in structure, we hope to provide our recipients a decision in June 2023 to start implementing earlier in the fiscal year.

We are excited to receive and review your DEIG application submissions for the 2023-2024 academic year and look forward to working with you in creating a campus committed to advancing diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion.

The indefatigable Martin Pousson generously offered his time and mentorship to lead a team of students to resurrect our department’s Sigma Tau Delta Iota Chi, the national honors society for students in English. Please see the above announcement for more detail! But we reiterate this achievement here, as there was much red tape to overcome. Kudos, Martin and Sigma team!!
