The Search and Screen Committee for our Latinx Literature and Culture position is bringing another finalists to campus today, Feb. 6. Please attend his talk on his research, which will be held in ST 703 from 2:00-3:15 p.m. We encourage you to attend!

Dr. Irene Clark is pleased to announce that her friend and colleague, Dr. Les Perelman, Emeritus from MIT, is coming on February 11th at 2:00 p.m. to her English 455 class, “Literacy, Rhetoric and Culture.” He will give a talk titled: “The Art of the Steal: Deceptive Rhetoric from Classical Greece to Contemporary Politics to the Graduate Record Examination.” If interested in attending, please contact Irene.

The English department is moving more firmly into the twenty-first century with an Instagram account, @csunenglishdepartment. Please advertise in your classes!

The Faculty Development Probationary Faculty Support Grant, funded by Academic Affairs, provides probationary faculty (those in their pre-tenure years) with 3 units of reassign time in order to advance their research agenda and meet scholarly productivity requirements for retention, tenure, and promotion (RTP). Apply for a Faculty Development Learning-Centered Grant (formerly known as Beck Grants) and receive a year filled with fun, community, and coffee to take your teaching to the next level. Those who are awarded the TUC-FLC Grants will receive: $3,000 stipend & evidence-based learning-centered teaching practices. Summer Seminars and Institutes for Higher Education Faculty
NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes for Higher Education Faculty provide higher education faculty across the nation the opportunity to broaden and deepen their engagement with the humanities. The 1 to 4 week professional development programs allow participants (NEH Summer Scholars) to explore recent developments in scholarship, teaching, and/or curriculum through study of a variety of humanities topics.

Awards for Faculty at Hispanic-Serving Institutions
National Endowment for the Humanities
The NEH Awards for Faculty program seeks to strengthen the humanities at Hispanic-Serving Institutions by encouraging and expanding humanities research opportunities for individual faculty and staff members. Awards support individuals pursuing scholarly research that is of value to humanities scholars, students, and/or general audiences. The program is open to all faculty and staff members, including full time, part time, adjunct, and retired faculty and staff at Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Awards support individuals who work between half time and full time on their projects. Projects may be at any stage of development.

4. Achievements

Matt Bernstien, an MA English alum, has a feature article called “The Shadow” in the current Wild West Magazine about a highwayman operating around San Francisco and Sacramento throughout the 1860s and 1870s.

Stephanie Lim, an MA English alum, is serving as dramaturg for the Chance Theatre (Anaheim) production of Fun Home, running January 31 to March 1. The musical is based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel of the same name and explores how Bechdel’s coming-of-age and LGBTQ identity intersect with the life and death of her father.
