Visual Tracking and Readability Issues on Mobile

Date & Time
Tuesday, March 14, 2023 - 11:20 AM PST
Location
Grand JK
Description
Mobile devices present unique challenges related to text readability, due to small screen size, screen orientation, small text size, device instability, and other environmental factors. Compounding these challenges, most mobile browsers do not offer extension capabilities (as desktop browsers do) that allow users to customize their reading experience. This presentation will cover the ways in which these challenges affect text readability, with a focus on cognitive and visual aspects of reading. These issues will be discussed in the context of common visual disabilities such as binocular vision issues, as well as cognitive reading challenges like dyslexia, ADHD, and other neurodiverse conditions. In addition to discussing challenges for mobile text display, this presentation will also provide suggestions and examples of how some websites or mobile apps provide tools or technologies that can alleviate these issues. This presentation will also discuss the ways in which improving readability has been shown to help bottom-line metrics such as Time On Page and Subscriber Conversion Rate, which all companies care about and are responsive to. Lastly, this presentation will demonstrate various browsers that do offer extension support, discuss some of the pros and cons of their different approaches, and some of the challenges that remain to be solved in terms of ease of use, and inclusivity.
