Product managers are responsible for the success of a product. In this session, we will take a closer look at the general responsibilities of a product manager to make the software inclusive for everyone, regardless of their disabilities.
Awareness:
A product manager should have the ability to understand the impact of the product on a wide range of people’s needs, especially people with disabilities. To gain this knowledge, if the product exists, test with people with disabilities to understand their challenges. If the product is brand new, plan to include guidelines and best practices. WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).
Make time:
It’s important to reserve time in each sprint to design, develop and test for the accessibility requirements. The early process helps to reduce the cost of fixing bugs after the deployment. Include accessibility requirements in the sprint planning to account for the requirements. Include accessibility as part of the user stories or write a separate user story for accessibility.
Skill up the team:
Enable the team members to gain knowledge of accessibility guidelines and the needs of people with disabilities. Encourage certifications.
Definition of Done:
Accessibility should be part of the testing and deployment process. The automated test covers 30 to 40% of WCAG. Plan for manual test and usability test.
Continuous focus:
Accessibility is not a one-time implementation or afterthought. It’s a continuous process.
