Description
This session is targeted at DSPS programs in higher education. Our premise is that such programs may be sacrificing maximum student outcomes for the sake of program efficiency. The goal of this presentation is to reacquaint professionals with the value of meeting with students on an individual level in order to best determine their needs and help them achieve their goals. Our aim is to encourage intake appointments, live training sessions, and follow-up assessments rather than relying on automated systems or tutorial videos that allow such encounters to become secondary. We also want to encourage programs to apply unique rather than one-size-fits-all solutions -- a concept that can work alongside, rather than instead of, Universal Design. Examples involving assistive technology and alternate media services (the presenters' fields of expertise) will serve as proxies for services in general. Overall, this session is meant to motivate DSPS staff to work more closely with the students we serve, and to remind us of why we do what we do. It will be designed to promote discussion, share ideas, and spark innovation. It's about thinking outside of the box by going back to our roots.
