A. OVERVIEW OF THE ARF REMEMBRANCE POLICY

The ARF Remembrance Policy establishes a Remembrance Committee composed of a representative from each of CSUN’s eight colleges and the University Library, who will solicit and gather materials to write (or to delegate the writing of) a remembrance article for ARF Notes. The Committee is chaired annually by the immediate past president of ARF. The chair is responsible for identifying the deceased, notifying the committee member who represents the college of the deceased, and for coordinating the writing of the remembrance article. In addition, the chair is to notify the ARF membership of a death and the ARF webmaster who will add the deceased’s name to the website’s In Memoriam page.

Committee members of each college/Library are appointed by the ARF President with the approval of the ARF Board. Whenever possible, Remembrance articles are written for all CSUN faculty and staff holding emeritus status and for those who are tenured and passed away within a year or two before their expected retirement. At the discretion of the Remembrance Committee chair, other deceased members of the CSUN community may be memorialized. Remembrance articles focus on the professional career and the accomplishments of the deceased.

B. CREATION OF A REMEMBRANCE COMMITTEE

1. The Remembrance Committee shall be a standing committee of ARF.

2. The sole purpose of the Remembrance Committee shall be to write and publish remembrance articles that honor deceased faculty and other members of the university community whom we wish to remember.   These other members shall be treated the same as faculty in the rest of this policy on remembrances.

3. Membership

a. The ARF Immediate Past President shall be the Chair of the Remembrance Committeea.

b. One member from each of the eight CSUN Colleges and the Library shall represent the faculty in that discipline.

c. The committee chair shall represent staff members who are not affiliated with any of the Colleges or the Library.

4. Responsibilities

a. The chair shall coordinate the writing of remembrance articles.

i. The chair shall initiate the process by identifying the deceased person to whom the remembrance article is dedicated.

ii. The chair shall notify the committee member who represents the college of the deceased.

iii. The chair shall consult with the editor of ARF Notes concerning forthcoming content in the newsletter.

iv. When someone to be memorialized passes away, the chair shall notify the ARF membership of the death and shall also notify the ARF Webmaster who shall enter the deceased’s name in the website’s In Memoriam page.

b. The committee member representing the academic area of the deceased faculty member shall

i. consult, to the extent possible, with friends, colleagues, and family of the deceased,

ii. solicit and gather materials in support of the remembrance article,

iii. write the remembrance article or delegate the writing to an appropriate colleague.

C. SELECTION OF DECEASED FACULTY MEMBERS TO BE MEMORIALIZED

1. Whenever possible, deceased ARF members shall be honored with a remembrance article to be published in ARF Notes.

2. At the discretion of the Remembrance Committee chair, other deceased members of the CSUN faculty may be similarly memorialized.  These include retired faculty members who were not members of ARF and those who made significant contributions to CSUN but died prior to retirement.

3. At the discretion of the Remembrance Committee chair, other deceased members of the CSUN community, who by virtue of their close association with the CSUN faculty and their contributions to CSUN, may be similarly honored.

D. CRITERIA FOR ADDING FACULTY/STAFF TO THE ARF WEB SITE IN MEMORIAM PAGE

1. All members of ARF are eligible to be placed on the In Memoriam page.  This includes CSUN faculty who were once members of ARF, but whose membership had lapsed

2. CSUN faculty who were not members of ARF shall be similarly memorialized.  Faculty must hold emeritus status to be placed on the In Memoriam page.  Exceptions can be made for those who are tenured and pass away within a year or two before their expected retirement.

3. Staff and Lecturers holding emeritus rank are eligible to be added to the In Memoriam page.

4. The In Memoriam page can be used to honor other members of the University community whom we wish to honor.

5. Final decisions on exceptions to the criteria will be made by the sitting ARF President.

E. GUIDELINES FOR THE REMEMBRANCE ARTICLES

1. Whenever possible, a photograph of the deceased faculty member shall be printed in ARF Notes with the remembrance article.

2. Writers of the remembrance articles should keep in mind the audience to whom the articles are addressed.  The articles should, therefore, emphasize the deceased’s career at CSUN and other institutions, stressing their teaching, research and other professional contributions to their institutions and disciplines.  Writer also should present, whenever possible, pertinent personal qualities of the deceased  and relevant experiences outside the academic environment.

3. In general, each remembrance article should not exceed 300 words.

Approved by the ARF Board on September 8, 2021

F. RESOURCES FOR A REMEMBRANCE ARTICLE

Below are a number of resources that can be used to gather information about a faculty member.  Probably, you will need only to use the first three resources.  The others are listed if you wish to explore a person’s life in more depth or do not find what you need in the first three resources.

1. CSUN WEBSITE

www.csun.edu
Use the search bar on the upper right corner of the page.  Put in the faculty members’ name.  The date of hire and the degrees earned should appear. Use this search engine for other CSUN-related information about a faculty member.

2. ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS

Call the academic department to determine if they have a CV/resume or other documents related to the faculty member’s career.  Ask if a photo is available.  Perhaps, the chair or staff can suggest other departmental faculty/staff that can be consulted.  Also check the department’s website for information about individual faculty members.

3. GOOGLE

www.google.com
Insert the name of the faculty member or the information sought in the search bar.

4. FAMILY MEMBERS

At times, it is possible to contact a faculty member’s family using the phone numbers, email address, and/or home address of the individual listed in the ARF Membership Roster.  On occasion, a family member may contact ARF to report a death, share an obituary notice, and/or provide other useful information.

5. LOS ANGELES TIMES OBITUARIES

www.legacy.com/obituaries/latimes/

6. CSUN UNIVERSITY CATALOGUES

The CSUN Library maintains University Catalogues dating from 1956.  The catalogues contain lists of faculty employed, their date of hire, their academic department, and their degrees. The catalogues can be found in the main stacks, stored in section LD729.6 N6U77. The catalogues can be useful if information about a faculty members’ department and employment cannot be found using the CSUN search engine.

7. CSUN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY WEBSITE –  ONLINE ACCESS

https://library.csun.edu
When the page comes up, there is a One Search box.  A variety of search options are available including archival material and digital collections.  The Daily Sundial is part of the digital collection, as is the CSUN yearbook, Sunburst, which dates from 1957.
During the pandemic, you can chat online with a librarian or chat by phone.  The telephone number is 818-538-7814.  This telephone number can be used Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

8. LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY (LAPL) – ONLINE RESOURCES

Two resources considered by many to be useful in gathering information about individuals are www.Ancestry.com  and www.Newspapers.com.  Both sources charge fees to use their sites.  However, the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) has Ancestry.com and selected portions of Newspapers.com.  If you have a LAPL card you can use the LAPL database listings at https://www.lapl.org/collections-resources/research-and-homework, and check on the “History, Geography & Genealogy” box in the big box at the top of the page.  You can also check the “Newspapers” box to get more content, if desired.  When logging on from outside a library branch, as during the pandemic, you will be asked for your library card number, which should be entered without spaces, and your PIN, which is the last 4 digits of the telephone number the Library has on file for you.

If you are unable to log on with your PIN, call any of the Library to Go curbside pickup locations (https://www.lapl.org/library-to-go) from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays and a librarian will troubleshoot your account.
