Three things about that Boise State beatdown by Virginia
Clearly, Boise State (2-2) isn't the Power 5-buster that made it a college football darling over the past decade. No. 22 San Diego State looks like the Mountain West's legitimate New Year's Six candidate. Boise State has to lower its aspirations to winning the conference and merely busting the Aztecs' dreams. Twenty years ago, that would've been plenty. After all, in 1997, its second season as a I-A program, Boise State got steamrolled at home by Cal State Northridge, 63-23, in Boise. No matter that Northridge eventually vacated that win for using ineligible players. The Broncos thought the days of getting walloped at home were in the misty past. -- Yahoo! Sports
Virginia Just Handed Boise State Its Worst Home Loss Since 2001
After that 2001 Washington State loss, you have to go all the way back to the opening game of the 1997 season, Boise State’s second year as a Division I-A program, to find a home loss as bad as the one Virginia inflicted. That year, Cal State Northridge pasted the Broncos 63–23 in Boise, only to later forfeit the win for using three ineligible players. Boise State’s coach that year? How long has it been since Boise State football lost this badly at home?
Early in the fourth quarter, Virginia led 42-14. Had the margin stayed that way, it would have been the worst home loss since 1997 when Houston Nutt made his Boise State debut in a 63-23 loss to Cal State Northridge. -- Idaho Statesman
