After about a year, my two friends, who later became a couple, and I took the entrance exams for grad school, completed long applications, gathered transcripts and analyzed tuition costs. Meet Fillmore’s New Police Cadets

Meet our Fillmore Cadets: Denise Marquez (right) is a recent graduate of California State University, Northridge. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in sociology and is looking to continue a law enforcement career with the finest agency in the county, VCSO! Aalyiah Alfaro (left) is finishing up her last year at California State University Channel Islands where she is working on her sociology degree. Aalyiah is also doing an internship with Ventura County Behavioral Health and is looking to pursue a career in clinical social work. In addition to knocking their Cadet responsibilities out of the park, these two superstars are both Explorer Advisors who spend countless hours training, mentoring, and developing our young Explorers. By the time she graduated from California State University, Northridge, McDonald nearly qualified for the Olympic trials in high jump. She also competed in the heptathlon, with her strengths in sprints and jumps. After chasing the Olympic Trial Qualifier in the high jump in 1988, McDonald retired—for the first time—and eventually moved onto triathlons and road races. A Reel-y Good Time

Dave Haws worked at Metropolitan Theatres while still in high school, including during the wintertime film festival, which sparked not only a lifelong love for movies, but also the desire to make a living in the industry. Haws, who was born and raised in Santa Barbara, headed out of town to get an education, majored in cinema arts at Cal State Northridge and remained in the L.A. area to pursue a career in the film industry, mostly in non-glamorous roles. Haws has worked in the camera and lighting departments on movies and other video projects, but also directed shorts, music videos, and commercials. -- Montecito Journal

Graf is a military veteran having served six years in the United States Air Force after graduating with a degree in Aviation Management from Southern Illinois University. He also holds a degree in Physical Education from California State University Northridge where he competed on the University’s cross-country team. -- First Call

Nelson Saenz Is on the Front Lines of Tech

Saenz graduated from California State University, Northridge and went on to start his career as a computer engineer at the American Legion in Indianapolis and then as an IT infrastructure manager at the Chicago-based Merisant company. BUSD Announces New Assistant Superintendent

Junge holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish teaching from Brigham Young University, and two master’s degrees in educational administration and educational psychology from California State University, Northridge. She earned her doctorate in learning and instruction from the University of Southern California. -- Burbank Leader
