GRADING STANDARDS FOR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION
GRADING STANDARDS FOR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION

In class we mentioned your grading standards will be based on two factors:

Top Score Proves Useful

Content/Style usually represent whether or not you are making progress in the class. The bottom score helps you check whether or not grammar, punctuation, spelling, or some other issues are giving you fits. You can immediately do something about the bottom score, and you should. The deletionary cards help you keep track of your minus ones and do something about them. Every semester I have students tell me they never learned about grammar in high school. That is a sad commentary.

Check the selected references section of the Expanded Syllabus and find the sources that will help you. Feel free to visit in the office or after class about other sources. Don't forget the HARBRACE COLLEGE HANDBOOK in its latest edition is always an aid.

To review, the following grading standards are mentioned early in the Expanded Syllabus:

 1. 13-12-11 (Grade A)
 2. 10-9-8 (Grade B)
 3. 7-6-5 (Grade C)
 4. 4-3-2 (Grade D)
 5. 1 (Grade F)
 6. 0 (No Credit)

Bottom Mechanics Affects Overall Score

From this 13-point scale you need to know what happens to the bottom score. The bottom mechanics score, including grammar, punctuation, mechanical friction, spelling,. violation of word division rules, form, spacing, and font, and following directions, starts at "9" for the first mechanical error and decreases one number for each additional mistake. I assume (as dangerous as that word is) college students should not be making mechanical errors and forgetting to correct them. Therefore, please PROOFREAD. Yes, if you don't have a comma, semicolon, colon, or apostrophe in the right place, you will, unfortunately, receive a minus 1.

Also, white-out corrections are not acceptable on any assignment.
