Student Questions

You should know the following topics:

  • Phonology: Great Vowel Shift, Received Pronunciation
  • Vocabulary: Sources of and methods of formation of new words during the Modern period
  • Orthography and the Effects of the Printing Press
  • Historical developments (e.g. colonialism, Industrial Revolution) and their impact on the language
  • Intellectual/Cultural Developments: Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment and effects on language
  • Attitudes towards dialect and social variation in linguistic usage
  • Prescriptivism and prescriptive grammars
  • Attitudes towards the status of English

Be prepared to examined short passages and comment on their significance with respect to linguistic features, attitudes towards the use and status of English, and relation to historical, intellectual, and cultural developments.

I expect the final exam to take a little over an hour.
