Robertus, Cardinal Priest in the titulus of S. ?Caeciliae?  This is a conjecture of Olduinus in Ciacconius, column 888, in place of 'Clementis'— which is impossible. Cardella (p. 189) insists that there were two Roberts of the same family, the Capizucchi, one created Cardinal of S. Clemente in 1097, and the other Cardinal Iohannes Robertus of S. Cecilia under Honorius II, created in 1127.  Cardella's information probably derived from an inscription in the Church of S. Maria in Porticu (S. Maria in Campitelli), where the burial chapel of the Capizucchi is located [V. Forcella, Inscrizioni delle chiese di Roma V (1874), p. 380 no. 1042;  P.Galletti, Inscriptiones Romanae infimae aetatis   I (Romae 1760), p. cclxxxi, no. 176]. The inscription was placed by Cardinal Raymundus Capizucchi, OP, in 1685, who built the new chapel and transferred the remains of his family thither.  Actually the Cardinal of S. Caecilia in the 1120's was Cardinal Johannes, not Cardinal Robertus, and not Cardinal Ioannes Robertus; and this Johannes of S. Cecilia had been at the Lateran Synod of 1112, and his latest subscription was on May 7, 1128 [JL 7312]; he was succeeded by Goselinus or Jocelinus in 1129.  Cardinal Johannes could not, therefore, be the alleged Capizucchi cardinal, Ioannes Robertus. But neither of those Capizucchi, then, has a real existence as a cardinal. No Capizuccho was Cardinal of San Clemente. It is Cardinal Rainerius who is attested as Cardinal of S. Clemente since the reign of Gregory VII; he was elected Pope on August 13, 1099 [Migne PL 163, p. 31 no. 1; Watterich II, p. 17]. The only Robertus known is Robertus of S. Eusebio.
