Returning International Students
We’re so glad you are considering a return to CSUN! Your decision to come back reflects the kind of persistence and resilience we admire. Welcome back, Matador!
A returning CSUN international student is one who has completed non-extension course work in a previous spring or fall semester. Returning students include those in good academic standing, on academic notice, and those wishing to return after previous disqualification in their last semester at CSUN.
This page includes readmission information for returning international students seeking a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree.
Please note: If you have already earned a bachelor’s degree or higher, we encourage you to apply to a CSUN graduate program.
Readmission Requirements
Your path back to CSUN depends on whether:
- You left the school in good standing (or on academic notice), or
- You were previously disqualified because your GPA fell below the floor listed for your class level for a specified period of time.
No additional admission criteria are required to re-apply to CSUN. However, you will still need to submit certain documents as an international student. Please see what you need in the "Steps to Re-Apply" section below.
- If you have completed any college or university courses since you last attended CSUN, send us your official transcripts.
- If you have course work now in progress, send us your official preliminary transcripts.
- If you have not taken courses elsewhere since your last attendance at CSUN, no transcripts are required.
Eligibility Requirements for Transfer Students
At CSUN, we offer a path for you to return after being previously disqualified. As part of this process, you must show improvements that prove your academic growth which will then continue as you return to CSUN. These include:
- Successfully completing courses in your degree program at another institution.
- Earning grades that show your ability to return to good academic standing in a reasonable timeframe if readmitted to CSUN.
Good news! Starting Spring 2025, it’s a little easier for previously disqualified students to return to CSUN.
For Spring 2025 Readmission
You must complete the following two basic subject courses that are required for CSU general education with a grade of C- or better:
- Written Communication
- Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning
We strongly recommend that you also complete the remaining basic subject CSU general education courses with a C- or better before returning to CSUN:
- Critical Thinking*
- Oral Communication (Speech)
*Students re-applying as engineering or computer science majors do not have to complete a critical thinking course prior to readmission.
We strongly urge you to meet with a CSUN academic advisor in the college of your major to review your specific readmission requirements.
While you are preparing to demonstrate your progress, you should also begin your Cal State Apply application.
For Fall 2024 Readmission (past)
You must have completed each of the four basic subject courses required for CSU general education with a grade of C- or better at another institution. The courses are:
- Written Composition (English)
- Mathematics (Must be college-level, above intermediate algebra)
- Critical Thinking (Logic)*
- Oral Communication (Speech)
*Note: Students applying as Engineering or Computer Science majors do not have to complete critical thinking prior to readmission.
We strongly urge you to meet with a CSUN academic advisor in the college of your major to review your specific readmission requirements.
Eligibility Requirements for Graduate Students
Your readmission will be determined by your respective graduate program.
Please contact your department or graduate program coordinator to determine requirements and deadlines before re-applying.
