August 24, 2007: Welcome to Geography 490 and congratulations on making it this far in your coursework. This course is a "capstone" which means it is supposed to be, sort of, the crowning acheivement of your academic career. It is supposed to allow the student to "put it all together" and demonstrate that you have indeed become a geographer. It allows the faculty to see if we've been doing a good job of training you to become a geographer.
Of course there are some difficulties with this fantasy and I will try to help you through the course and we can all work on ensuring that this course does what it is supposed to do.
We'll mee on Wednesday nights in Sierra Hall and you should try to get the text, though the bookstore has really dropped the ball on this. Luckily, many of you will have the book from Geography 300.
Key Methods in Geography. 2003. N J Clifford and Gill Valentine, (editors) Thousand Oaks: Sage ISBN: 0761974911 076197492X
See you on Wednesday.
