Nutrition College Bowl
The Marilyn Magaram Center hosted the 10th Annual Nutrition College Bowl (NCB) on March 10, 2012. Eleven teams participated in a double elimination tournament that saw California State University, Northridge defeat CSU San Luis Obispo in the final and win the tournament for a record fourth time.
Teams from Arizona State University, CSU Chico, CSU Fresno, CSU Los Angeles, CSU San Bernardino, Central Washington University, Pepperdine University, UC Berkeley and UC Davis also participated.
This year, the NCB also hosted the Student Dietetic and Food Science Association’s (SDFSA) annual Career Symposium. Students were given a chance to learn about potential career paths and the education/training required. CSUN students and NCB participants were given a chance to visit two of four panels discussing various careers including: Food Management, Clinical Nutrition, Private Practice and Food Science/Informatics.
For the first time, the NCB was held at CSUN’s Northridge Center in the University Student Union. Due to the increased popularity of the event, the event has outgrown the current Magaram Center facilities.
As ever, plans for the 11th Nutrition College Bowl in 2013 are underway.

As part National Nutrition Month, the Marilyn Magaram Center participated in Glendale Unified School District’s annual “A-Z Salad Bar” event, held at Jefferson Elementary School. Each year the event is hosted by a different school within the district in partnership with the Network for a Healthy California. The ‘salad bar’ includes twenty-six different fruits and vegetables, one for each letter of the alphabet, and is served to over four hundred students. At the event the Magaram Center promoted balanced food choices with a MyPlate and food model display, and a game asking children to name fruits and vegetables of various colors. The students also received demonstrations on healthy beverage choices and physical activity before passing through the salad bar to try the many types of fresh produce available. The Magaram Center continues to participate in children’s education of healthy diet and lifestyle habits.

The Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA), sponsored by the Marilyn Magaram Center, was featured in a story presented by Valley View News at CSUN. This story emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle by incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into one's daily diet. The CSA program offers the CSUN community easy access to a small or large box of farm-fresh produce on a weekly basis. The video (which can be seen below) was featured on channel 36 on Sunday, April 1st.
