THEATRE : A LIBRARY RESEARCH GUIDE

This is a bibliography designed to be a reference/research guide to selected reference--primarily Reference Room items--sources for theatre. Therefore, no attempt has been made to include every title dealing with theatrical literature. The emphasis of this work will be on those standard sources which serve as points of departure for subsequent research within the field of theatre: i.e. dictionaries, digests, encyclopedias, guides, indexes, etc.. This section where "Histories" are included is more for what they contain--giving an over-all view of theatre--than for guiding the student/researcher to further information.

The technical aspects of theatre are not within the scope of this work. The student/researcher is directed to the following Library of Congress subject headings: Stage lighting; Stage props; Theater--Production and direction; and Theaters--Stage--setting and scenery. The Library of Congress subject headings are used primarily in academic institutions, and some larger research oriented public or special library collections. A few title on "Costume" (subject heading: Costume) will be cited in the "Miscellaneous and Special" section.

In those areas closely aligned with theatre, such as music, literature, fine arts, etc., only those general or specific reference works that are of particular importance to theatre are listed. This does not mean to simply that sources for these areas are any less important, but time and space dictate that some framework be set up within which to work comfortably.

Entries for each section are alphabetical by author or title, and briefly annotated. Where the entry/title is explanatory, no annotation will be given, unless the source has a unique/particularly useful feature not mentioned in the title. In addition, where the importance and usage of entry titles are duplicated, no duplicate annotations will be listed. Subject headings are given to enable the researcher to find additional/other sources. Please also note publication dates for sources listed. If you are searching for information/events that occurred in the 1980's or 90's, a source whose publication date lists 1956 or 1918, etc. Would not be logical to select.
