VI. YEARBOOKS AND DIRECTORIES

(Yearbooks are annual volumes of professional/learned

to a specific composer’s work. They may also include events/information
of the year. Directories contain dated/current relevant information about
individuals, professional/learned societies, organizations, etc.).

VII. COLLECTED WORKS. MONUMENTS AND HISTORICAL SETS

(Collected works are complete collected works of a specific
composer in one or more editions. Monuments are scores, primarily in
facsimile, of early music. Historical sets"... any music publication
that is devoted to a past repertory." (Charles Sidney Robinson in The New
Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
) study original versions--based on
primary sources--as well as versions derived from secondary sources,
possibly including changes/additions to the original, which the modern
performer might deem more palatable in contemporary times.) Subject
Headings: These items are best accessed by using author listings rather
than subject headings, i.e. Beethoven, Ludwig van, 1770-1827 - Works;
Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus, 1756-1791 - Works. This section works best
when researching classical music composers of earlier centuries.
Collected Works, Monuments, and Historical Sets are indexed in: Heyer,
Anna Harriet. Historical Sets, Collected Editions, and Monuments
of Music
: a guide to their contents. [REF ML113.H52 1980
Refrm].

Since these items--for the most part--are scores, and all scores--with a
few exceptions--are on Reserve at the Fine Arts Desk (ARTS), they
will be located at the Lindley Avenue Library Annex (LALA) dome (1499).
In general, access to other music scores and sound recordings
(phonorecords, audio cassettes, CD’s)--these items will also be located
at the LALA (1499) dome--at CSUN is through the GEAC Advance online
catalog by the commands aw=(author word; use this command when searching
for composer, performer, etc.), work/s. The searching can be done by using the
main screen on GEAC Advance online catalog by the commands aw=(author word;
use this command when searching for composer, performer, etc.), =(title word),
and sw=(subject word) of the work/s. It is also possible to limit or modify your
search by publication date, Language, or Material type (Musical scores=SCO,
Musical recordings=SND)etc. If you are searching for "The Art of Fuge/Die Kunst
der Fuge" by Johann Sebastian Bach, please do the following:

EXAMPLE:
At the GEAC Advance Welcom screen select (Make your selection by using
the Arrow keys, or the Spacebar). Press the Enter key. Type:aw=bach aw=johann
tw=art tw=fuge. Press the Enter key. The result will be ten titles. (With some
composers/performers, etc. it will probably be possible to use only "1" aw=notation.
Additionally, it will probably be possible to use only "1" tw=notation.
Particularly if the title has a unique/distinct title. In the case of the example cited above,
with just the listing of aw=bach tw=art, you'd get many entries for the somewhat large
and prolific musical Bach family). If you wish to further modify your search to include
Material type, such as scores (SCO) OR sound recordings--tapes, CD's,
etc.--(SND) this is also possible. To modify the ten titles further, by listing only scores,
select Modify Search then select Change Limits. The screen that appears
will be the Online Catalogue-Modify Search. At this screen, select
with Material Type; press Enter, and then type ??, and press Enter.
A description of the Materials type code will be displayed.
Line #6 is SCO(musical scores). Select that line number, and press Enter.
Press Enter again (approximately twice) until the ...Modify Search screen
reappears. Press Enter again to Proceed with Search. Five title should appear.
Enter the line you would like to see first, then select Full Display to locate
the item in the Library.
