The Blues!!
The Department of English & Philosophy at Arkanss
State University
(Jonesboro campus) will hold a third interdisciplinary
Delta studies
conference on April 10-12, 1997. Scholarly papers,
organized panels, and
creative multimedia presentations and demonstrations
on the blues and
related forms of expressive culture may come from any
huanities and social
science discipline, especially American studies, anthropology,
folklore
studies, history, literature, musicology, popular culture,
and sociology.
Though any topic relating to the blues, its sources,
and its offshoots
will be considered, presenters might give special attention
to pedagogical
issues, sacred and secular in Delta expressive culture,
the blues and
related forms (such as gospel, rhythm n' blues, rock
n' roll, and rap) in
literature and other media, women and gender, and the
historical
dimensions of the blues and related forms.
Proposals for papers should include a 250-word summary;
those for creative
presentations should include a sampling of previous
work.
The deadline for submissions is December 15, 1996.
