CLASSROOM OBSERVATIONS: Please note all CLASSROOM observations for this course MUST BE DONE IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING/AFTER SCHOOL SETTING!
The Assignment Description: General
All students must complete a minimum of 10 observation hours and are asked to have their hours verified by their cooperating teacher through an “Observation Verification Form.” Also make sure you have obtained a Certificate of Clearance.

- Students working full-time in a classroom are asked to submit a letter from their principal stating that they have been employed throughout the course of this semester. This must be submitted on school stationery and handed in at the end of the term.
- For students working full-time positions unrelated to education, exceptions may be made to have their observation hours completed in after-school settings.
Introduction
The purpose of this exercise is to help you better understand the nature of teaching English at the secondary school level so that you will have concrete, experiential knowledge of the field you are considering as your vocation. This assignment fulfills the intention of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to help students make informed decisions about the choice to become a secondary school teacher.
You will need to observe, analyze, and reflect upon the way(s) the teaching of literature in the secondary classroom is different (or similar) to what you have been experiencing as a university student. Readings, classroom discussion, and assignments from your English 429 class may provide a backdrop to and information base for these classroom observations.
Rationale
The classroom observations: approximately half for middle school and half for high school. In order for you to understand the wide-range of students and treatment of subject matter at the secondary school level, you will be required to attend classes at both a middle and high school. You will also be required to attend different kinds of classes or note different kinds of student ability levels.
