Several weeks ago Laura Bush canceled a poetry symposium at the White House because she learned that many of the poets invited to the event were planning to read anti-war poetry. Since her cancellation, poets from all over the country have been reading their anti-war poetry at community centers, universities, and protests--proving again that poets are always at the forefront of anti-war movements. Thousands of these poems are archived at
www.poetsagainstthewar.org. Join us in celebrating poetry as a form of struggle against oppression.

Everyone is Welcome!!!Come and listen to anti-war poetry from around the world. A lively discussion will follow each poem, and we also invite you to bring your own poetry to

March 26, Wed CSUN Community To Hold A Candlelight Vigil In Memory Of Rachel Corrie

The event will include guest speakers, song, and poetry in a collective mourning and prayer, for Rachel Corrie, the Middle East, and World peace.

On March 16, 2003, the Israeli military murdered Rachel Corrie, a U.S. citizen, a nonviolent peace activist, and a member of the International Solidarity Movement. Rachel Corrie, a 23 year old college student, stood in front of an Israeli military bulldozer, wearing a bright orange blazer and in clear view of the driver, in order to protect the house of a Palestinian physician from demolition. Photographs and eyewitness accounts prove beyond any possible doubt that the driver intentionally ran over her, crushing and killing her, amidst the screams of her companions.

Students, faculty, staff and community members reacted with shock upon learning the news. "Rachel's murder by Israeli forces brings home what this struggle is all about. Rachel left the relative safety of U.S. soil to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people whose homes are being destroyed by the Israeli government with our tax dollars. Rachel's courageous life inspires new hope and determination in all of us to continue the struggle for peace and justice worldwide," said Rosa Furumoto, a Professor of Chicana/o Studies. Abel Silva, a member of SAW, added: "Every time I hear she was a college student our age, I shudder to think it could have easily been one of us."

CSUN SAW and UPJ members are concerned that this murder has not received appropriate coverage in the media or attention by our elected officials. "The Israeli military murdered Rachel Corrie because of her courageous efforts to prevent Israeli atrocities against innocent Palestinian civilians. To add to the injustice of her murder, Israeli armored vehicles even attacked mourners at Rachel Corrie's commemoration service, as they placed flowers where Rachel was killed. The time is long overdue for the United States Congress to end its funding of Israeli brutality and human rights violations," said Dr. David Klein, a Professors of Mathematics.

The event is sponsored jointly by SAW and UPJ.

A CELT presentation on "Teaching for Peace and Justice"

By Professor Vivian Tseng (Psychology) and Professor Glenn Omatsu (Asian American Studies and EOP)

John Dewey once stated that the goal of education in the United States should not be to simply have students study democracy to to train them in the practice of democracy. Similarly, in this critical period of history, is it enough for students to only study about peace and justice, or can they become leaders in the movement for a peaceful and just society?

Mike Boehm is a Vietnam veteran who served in Army intelligence. In 1991, he returned to Vietnam to help build a medical clinic. While there, he came to terms with many of his personal experiences during the war and saw the healing effect that reconciliation projects had on people - including himself. He has since returned on 12 occasions, helping to coordinate the building of schools, distribute loan funds, establish exchanges, and Chair the My Lai Peace Park Project. The Peace Park Project was recently featured on a "60 Minutes" story with Mike Wallace. In the story, two helicopter pilots,
Hugh Thompson and Larry Colburn, were reunited with civilians they helped rescue during the My Lai Massacre. The dedication of the Peace Park was also incorporated into the story.

Mike's visit is made possible by Phi Beta Delta, the Honor Society for International Scholars; the Distinguished Visiting Speakers Program - Office of Graduate Studies; and the Department of Religious Studies.
