Math 581a, TR 7pm-8:15pm JR217

The course is intended to give a comprehensive treatment to numerical algorithms for solving the linear systems of algebraic equations. The computation errors and stability of the numerical procedures will be studied from the prospective of finite precision calculations. Will be considered the direct methods of matrix inversion, e.g., LU factorization and Cholesky factorization, the iterative methods, e.g., Jacobi, Gauss-Seidel, and SOR methods. Methods for solving the eigenvalue problem will be studied, including Power Iteration, the QR method, and the Jacobi method. 3 credits, 2 classes per week, 1 midterm, 1 final exam.
