Message from the Provost, Mary Beth Walker
Provost’s Message
|
Colleagues, As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to take this opportunity to express how thankful I am for all of you – for the laughter we have shared, for your perseverance throughout the pandemic, for your dedication to our students, and in a special way, for your friendship. Serving as Provost at CSUN has been a remarkable experience, made all the more memorable by you – our faculty and staff. Thank you.
This issue of the newsletter includes some wonderful updates and opportunities for engagement and learning around campus. The College of Health and Human Development is hosting the inaugural Research Excellence and Innovation Conference on Thursday and Friday this week, open to everyone. Also, be sure to take a look at the Fall 2022 CSUN Student Snapshot, a fascinating look at student demographics, statistics and more details recently released by The Office of Institutional Research. I hope you will take a moment to consider these opportunities, read the latest news and think about getting involved. When you take advantage of the many things CSUN has to offer, not only do you benefit, but your enthusiastic engagement makes our university a better place for teaching and learning.
I wish you and yours a relaxing Thanksgiving break.
Mary Beth Walker, Ph.D. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

CAPSS Serves First-Time Transfer Students
|
|
The COMMunity and Academic Pathways for Student Success (CAPSS) program provides advisement for cohorts of first-time transfer students and offers mentorship and a guided pathway to graduation. Led by co-directors Dr. Monica Gallegos and Dr. Melissa Tindage and open to all COMS majors, CAPSS is designed to create a sense of belonging for our most vulnerable students, particularly first-generation, Black, and Hispanic/Latina/o/x students. The goals are to: 1. Ensure graduation within two years or less; 2. Prepare students for their careers; and 3. Increase retention of first-time transfer students through tutoring, community building events and peer support. The program is coordinated by COMS faculty members who conduct outreach to identify students to participate in the program, mentor students throughout the academic year and the summer, and assess the program. For more information, email capss@csun.edu.
