Provost’s Message

Colleagues,

It may be Summer, but plenty is happening in Academic Affairs!   As you know, there are several searches underway.  The search for a new Provost has been launched, and a search committee has been formed, led by Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Colin Donahue.  The search for the Dean of the College of Health and Human Development is proceeding at a slightly slower pace, so that the new Provost will be available to interview the finalists.  The new Dean of the College of Humanities, Dr. Jeffrey Reeder, will join us on August 1.  Dr. Reeder spent AY 2021-22 as the CSU International Programs Resident Director for Spain. Previously, he served as Chair of the Modern Language and Literatures Department at Sonoma State University where he taught Spanish courses in Cultural Studies, Linguistics, Teacher Education, and Translation, having first joined the department in 1998. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Reeder to CSUN.

Earlier this month, we shared news of the departure of Dr. Elizabeth Adams, AVP Undergraduate Studies, who has been named Dean of the Antelope Valley Campus of CSU Bakersfield.  While this is a tremendous opportunity for Dr. Adams, it is a true loss for CSUN;  her extensive knowledge and creativity has been a real asset to the university. We hate to lose her, but wish her the very best.  According to the process set out in Section 600, we are proceeding almost immediately in the process to name an interim AVP of Undergraduate Studies.  Watch for further information in the next few weeks.

We continue to forge ahead with the many new initiatives begun this past year, and I am very pleased to share our progress on the Identity-Based Resource Centers.  The Identity-Based Resource Center Report was published on January 18, 2022 and continues to engage and incorporate feedback from the CSUN community. President Beck charged Drs. Melanie Bocanegra and Freddie Sanchez to "Provide leadership as this initiative moves forward, working with a stakeholder group that will serve to provide advice, support and transparency.”  In alignment with Road Map and GI 2025, that stakeholder group is being recruited to:

  • Review the report and create a list of recommendations (June & July 2022);
  • Develop focused themes & consultation plans;
  • Conceptually design models (based on the report) for student facing support services (on-going): African American & Black Diaspora Resource Center;  Latinx/a/o Resource Center; Asian Pacific Islander & Desi American (APIDA) Resource Center; Native American Resource Center; Southwest Asian & North African Resource (SWANA) Center; and Thrive Center.

This issue of the Provost’s Newsletter includes other updates from around campus, and I hope you enjoy catching up on CSUN’s good news.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
