Message from the Provost, Mary Beth Walker

Provost’s Message

Hello Colleagues,

I am proud of all the hard work our faculty and staff have done when we get close to completing another highly successful semester, despite the many challenges of the pandemic.  Time and again, our community has persevered to not only do the work required, but to excel.  Two recent examples of our achievement come to mind: the 26th Annual Research & Creative Works Symposium, known as CSUNposium, which was a smashing success this year; and the ARCS Year-3 Lift-Off, which celebrated the transdisciplinary research of CSUN students and faculty. These events highlighted some of the tremendous work CSUN students do, and we should all take pride in their accomplishments.

Looking ahead, I can't believe final exams are nearly here.  I hope you are ready for Commencement, taking place May 20 - 23, and maybe you are even making summer plans.  I know I am! Enjoy the good news below!

The 2022 CSUNposium was a great success!  The event engaged 372 undergraduate and graduate students in oral and poster sessions in a virtual conference format. An exciting awards ceremony was held at the Orchard Conference Center, and a list of winners may be found here. Graduate student Jamey Fitzpatrick said, "We were so excited to participate and see what other students are researching."  Congratulations to all the student participants and the many faculty and staff who supported this outstanding event!

Explore Oral History Narratives Through a Virtual Exhibit

For decades, CSUN students, faculty, and others have conducted oral history interviews with diverse people who lived through significant events, cultural trends, or social movements.  You can explore these fascinating first-person stories in a University Library exhibition,  "Past/Present: Examining Oral History Narratives," online until July 15. Click this link to explore the narratives.

Work Continues on Equity Plan

CSUN is working with Dr. Estela Bensimon and Associates to address the large disproportionate impact experienced by African American students on our campus. Central to this journey is understanding that we are all first-generation equity practitioners who are committed to learning more about sustained, action-oriented inquiry to establish an equity-rich campus culture.  A captioned video recording of Dr. Bensimon's recent presentation may be found at this link. Contact the Office of Student Success for more information.

Hold the Date for the Road Map to the Future Finish Line Celebration!

The Road Map to the Future has been an inclusive, year-long campus-wide process aimed at gathering input to help identify CSUN’s future strategic directions. Equity, inclusion, and justice are essential to achieving our shared vision, and we hope you will take part in our Finish Line Celebration.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the presentation of Road Map findings, featuring President Beck and several members of the Road Map Steering Committee, on May 11th at 11 am at Kurland Hall Auditorium (LA 181).  Then join your campus colleagues outdoors for food, refreshments and a celebration after the event!

Watch for more information coming soon and check the Road Map to the Future website for details.
