Message from the Provost, Mary Beth Walker

Provost’s Message

Hello Colleagues,

It is hard to believe that Spring Break is nearly here, but the time has certainly flown.  In recent weeks, my meeting schedule has been divided between gatherings on Zoom and gatherings on campus, and I have to say that every time I am in an in-person meeting, the energy level in the room is HIGH.  It is really refreshing to join our colleagues face-to-face and just feel the enthusiasm and happiness in the room.  While Zoom continues to be an extremely effective tool for remote meetings, there is nothing like being in-person with your colleagues and students.  Certainly the pinacle of the in-person experience on our campus will be the commencement ceremonies happening on our campus in May.  What an exciting time for us, and what a tremendous celebration for our deserving students.

Earlier this week, our campus enjoyed the investiture of President Erika Beck, Ph.D., the sixth president of CSUN.  The celebration was truly a time for all faculty, staff, and students at our university to look forward to a brighter, more equitable future built on our common ground.

Spring at CSUN is always a busy time, and faculty should make note that applications are now available for the Exceptional Service to Students awards, with a deadline of March 28.  You will find more upcoming activities and good news below, including an update on the Road Map to the Future. Enjoy!

Mary Beth Walker, Ph.D.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Career-Changers Flock to Nursing Degree

For the 4th year in a row, a horde of would-be nurses is saying, "sign me up."  The sudden surge comes as no surprise, as each year the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing receives thousands of applications for only a few dozen spots.  Designed for non-nurses, the program takes only 15 months to finish, and in that time, students learn everything they need for a successful nursing career.

Chartered Centers Combine

StrengthUnited and the Mitchell Family Counseling Center, both chartered centers of CSUN’s Michael D. Eisner College of Education, are pleased to announce that they are merging their services and resources. The two Centers provide training for students in the Marriage & Family Therapy (MFT) program and mental health services to CSUN and the broader community. The merger allows the Centers to increase the scope and scale of services they can offer, and provide a more comprehensive continuum of care.

Road Map Process Picks Up Speed

Focused conversations are underway led by the Road Map Steering Committee, with more than 400 members of the CSUN community having participated in forums to provide their ideas for the strategic directions of our university. Equity, inclusion, and justice are essential to achieving a shared vision for CSUN, and it is important that your voice is heard. More focused conversations are being planned in the March-April timeframe both to gather community input and to share what the Steering Committee has heard throughout the process.

Be sure to watch for your opportunity to participate.  Go to https://www.csun.edu/provost/road-map-future for a schedule of upcoming events and even click on the "Share Your Input" link at the bottom of that webpage to give feedback now.
