A Note From the Provost

Provost Komarraju

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I have only been at CSUN for a few weeks and am extremely grateful for the warm welcome and kindness I have received from the Matador family.  It has helped me make the transition from Southern Illinois to Southern California, and already I feel the sense of community that comes from every corner of this campus.  The depth of care and concern for student wellbeing and inclusion shared by our faculty and staff is truly inspiring, and I look forward to hearing from you about how we can continue to further student success in all its dimensions.

Your work is not easy.  We live in unusual times, but you have made this a thriving, urban campus where everyone feels valued and engaged. Thank you for contributing your talent, leadership and hard work to make CSUN a "destination campus", a world-class institution recognized for teaching, innovation and advancing the public good.

Please watch my video, as I welcome you to Spring 2023 and offer best wishes for a highly successful and productive spring semester.

Sincerely,
Meera

Meera Komarraju, Ph.D.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dean Shari Tarver Behring

Meet the Dean: Shari Tarver Behring, Ph.D., Michael D. Eisner College of Education

What brought you to CSUN and how long have you been Dean?

I am in my 37th year teaching or serving as Dean in the Michael D. Eisner College of Education at CSUN.  I’ve convinced a few folks on campus I began here when I was 12!

Actually, I began at CSUN as a part-time lecturer in 1986 while completing my CA. license in Psychology.  Read more about Dean Tarver Behring at this link

It Happened on Campus 29 Years Ago

Did you know  . . . that on January 17, 1994, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook Northridge? The earthquake caused more than $400 million in damage.  Although its epicenter was about 1 mile from campus, thankfully there were no fatalities or serious injuries at CSUN.  The Northridge Earthquake was the most devastating natural disaster (based on damage and costs) to hit an American college campus as of that time. iROCA Coming Your Way!

The Office of Academic Assessment and Program Review has been working on a pilot to improve how they can support assessment practices on campus.  A new model of assessment will be launched in Fall 2023, Instructors Reporting on Classroom Assessment (iROCA), which will simplify the process of assessment for instructors, improve the reliability of assessment data, and enable more formative evaluation.

“iROCA offers many benefits,” said Janet S. Oh, Ph.D., Senior Director, Office of Institutional Research. “Not only does it support the institutional assessment that is required for our accreditation with WASC, but it also significantly reduces the faculty workload associated with assessment.”

iROCA has been in a pilot phase since Fall 2021, as the Office of Academic Assessment and Program Review gathered faculty input to improve the model.  The new assessment model is currently piloting in the Colleges of Humanities (2nd year), Arts Media & Communication (2nd year), Health & Human Development (1st year), and Social & Behavioral Sciences (1st year).

Faculty feedback on iROCA has been positive overall, as the following comments indicate:

  • “Wow that was quick! This ties SO Well with my CTVA 301 class.” - CTVA faculty member
  • “Thank you so much, again, for everything. The training was quick, easy, and supportive. I am beyond grateful for your generosity in helping me to get up to speed.” -English faculty member
  •  “This is a fantastic new system for doing assessment.  Thank you!” -Geography faculty member
The Office of Academic Assessment and Program Review will share the new model in the Spring with a wide variety of audiences, including  Faculty Senate, College Administrative Councils, and others. It is important to note that the new assessment model is designed for evaluating student learning and not for evaluating teaching effectiveness.
“We are enthusiastic about iROCA, as it provides an opportunity for the Office of Academic Assessment and Program Review to serve as a resource and support for faculty doing assessment,” explained Oh.  “We have approached the development and design of this new assessment model in the spirit of continuous improvement, and look forward to partnering with CSUN faculty as we continue to refine the model over time.”
