Conclusion of 2009-10 Furlough Program

To the Campus Community:

I'm pleased to announce formally the conclusion of the 2009-10 furlough pay and time reduction program. The program for faculty and staff on 12-month schedules will conclude on June 30, 2010, and at the end of August 2010 for employees on an academic year schedule.

Employees on 12-month schedules can expect a return to full salary with the August 1 pay warrants, while those on an academic-year schedule will see the change reflected in their September pay warrants.

I recognize that furloughs have been a source of great hardship for the campus community and our students.  As difficult as the program was, I hope there is some satisfaction in knowing that your sacrifices helped sustain the University and the CSU during a year of severely reduced funding.  Thank you for continuing to provide excellent instruction, student support, and administrative activities during this time of salary and time reduction.  I am deeply grateful for the dedication and grace that was exhibited during the past year, and proud of what we collectively accomplished this year.

The big question, of course, is, "Will there be furloughs next year?"  Unfortunately, a definitive response cannot be provided until the state and CSU budgets are finalized, which could be this summer or possibly in the early fall. (Furloughs of represented employees must be negotiated and approved by their unions.) The University leadership will keep people informed. I also encourage everyone to continue monitoring the Campus Budget News website for the most up-to-date and breaking news. Again, I want to thank you for all of your exceptional efforts during this period of salary and time reductions. I wish everyone a relaxing and enjoyable summer as we look forward to the start of the 2010-11 academic year.
