Andrew Ainsworth, Ph.D. – Director

Dr. Ainsworth is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and member of the Psychological Science Master’s Program, California State University, Northridge.  Dr. Ainsworth has 20 years of experience working with large data sets and conducting advanced quantitative and psychometric analyses.  During those 20 years he has 1) conducted impact assessments of community and schooled based intervention programs that focused on impacted populations (e.g. Latino, African American), 2) conducted and supervised program evaluations at all stages of program implementation (e.g., needs assessment, process, impact and outcomes assessment), 3) planned, designed, conducted and analyzed numerous large scale surveys in both English and Spanish in both paper-pencil and online formats, and 4) facilitated focus groups with data transcription as well as semi-structured interviews.

Scott Appelrouth, Ph.D. - Associate Director

is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at CSUN.  He has 6 years of experience in evaluating programs. His evaluation work has incorporated a range of data collection techniques including surveys, focus groups, interviews, and content analysis. He also has extensive experience in instrument design and quantitative analyses. His projects include serving as the Principal Investigator in a multi-site evaluation of social services delivery to the elderly throughout New York City’s five boroughs and serving as an evaluator on multi-million dollar federal grants for program implementation in higher education settings.

Jodi Constantine Brown, Ph.D. - Evaluator

Dr. Brown is a Professor in the Department of Social Work at CSUN and previously served as co-Associate Director of the CARE. She has 10 years of experience in evaluating programs including mixed methods evaluation design and execution for nonprofit agencies.  Dr. Brown also has experience conducting needs assessments, program evaluation and analysis (process, impact, and outcome) in community settings and in higher education settings. In addition, she has taught graduate courses in research design, methods, and evaluation for over 10 years.

Hui (Jimmy) Xie Ph.D. - Evaluator

Jimmy XieDr. Xie is an Associate Professor in Department of Recreation and Tourism Management at California State University Northridge. Dr. Xie has 10 years of experience in evaluation and research in the areas of recreation, health, and education, working with both quantitative and qualitative data. Dr. Xie’s research examines 1) health outcomes and determinants of recreation and physical activities, and 2) develops and evaluates prevention interventions aimed at improving healthy living of individuals, particularly individuals from ethnic minority groups. He also regularly teaches graduate research methods class in his department.

Research Assistants

Phoebe Shorter recently earned her Masters in Clinical Psychology - Research, having previously earned her BA in Psychology. Phoebe has worked on a variety of CARE projects as a student and will continue to support several faculty grants through to completion.
