Provost's Student SUCCESS Series - Advancing Equity in a Climate of Resistance: Aligning Culture & Strategy | March 30
Tuesday, March 30, 2021, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Description:
Although the concepts of “equity” and “equity mindedness” are more widely embraced by educators now than they were a decade ago, closing equity gaps remains an elusive goal at most colleges and universities. Thus, in this address, the presenter will unpack the myriad of institutional barriers that thwart systematic efforts to close equity gaps. In addition, he will propose intentional strategies to be enacted by college educators to move equity efforts forward despite these barriers. The insights of this presentation will be derived from the presenter’s experiences in working with colleges and universities across the United States in a range of equity-related efforts and initiatives.
Dr. Frank Harris III, professor of postsecondary education and co-director of the Community College Equity Assessment Lab (CCEAL) at San Diego State University, as well as senior strategist in the Division of Campus Diversity and Student Affairs, will present “Advancing Equity in a Climate of Resistance: Aligning Culture and Strategy.”

Voluntary At-Home COVID19 Testing for Employees Authorized to Work On Campus this Spring
CSUN is now offering voluntary COVID-19 testing (at no cost) for faculty, staff and student employees who have been approved to work on campus during the Spring 2021 semester. We have engaged a third-party vendor, Picture, by Fulgent Genetics, to increase our testing capacity and offer free, convenient at-home testing for employees as one of several initiatives in place to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.
Who is the Testing For?
- Testing is strongly recommended for all CSUN faculty and staff specifically approved to physically work continually or periodically on campus.
- This testing is currently not available to faculty & staff working remotely.
- Please note: This type of testing is for surveillance testing of asymptomatic individuals (i.e. no symptoms). If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or had close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, we recommend you consult with your personal physician first. Anyone who has contracted COVID-19 within the last 90 days should not participate in this ongoing testing.

Learn About The 2021-2022 Common Read: when they call you a terrorist: a black lives matter memoir
Do you want to know more about when they call you a terrorist: a black lives matter memoir, next year's Common Read, and have a lively discussion with colleagues from across campus?
when they call you a terrorist: a black lives matter memoir is written by Patrisse Khan-Cullors & asha bandele. Khan-Cullors, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, was raised in the San Fernando Valley, attended Cleveland High School, and paints a picture of growing up in Los Angeles that many of our students may recognize. It's a frank memoir about growing up Black in Los Angeles and covers a variety of issues including systemic racism, prejudice, police violence, mental health, incarceration, and more, that explain how she became the artist, organizer, and freedom fighter she is today.
Please join us for one of our faculty/staff book discussion groups this Spring. All staff and faculty are invited and welcome to join us as we talk about the issues and themes from the book. Are you interested, but haven't read the book yet? Join anyway - hopefully you'll be even more inspired to read it after a discussion.

Emergency Desk Reference for Faculty & Staff
While most faculty and staff continue to work virtually, it remains important to be aware of campus safety measures before an emergency occurs. An Emergency Operations Desk Reference is made available based on your role as either Staff or Faculty. You may reach the Desk Reference from the “Emergency Information” link at the bottom of the CSUN home page. In addition, a Desk Reference is available to students.
CSUN shares this information every semester to help you prepare for what to do during potential emergency situations on campus – medical emergency, fire/explosion, hazardous materials spill, bomb threat or suspicious object, earthquake, cyber security incident, or shooting situation. Although rare, tragic shootings on college campuses understandably cause much concern, so CSUN has prepared a video to educate our campus community: https://www.csun.edu/police/activeshooter. Finally, the Desk Reference provides general information on emergency preparedness and student responsibilities, as well as emergency phone numbers and where to get more information in the event of an emergency.
It is very important that you think ahead, are prepared for contingencies and update your contact information in the myNorthridge portal or the CSUN mobile app so CSUN may contact you in the event of an emergency. You are encouraged to provide a number for text messages, as well as an alternate telephone number and your email address.
From the Staff tab of the myNorthridge portal, go to the “Emergency Information” section and click on “Update My Personal Information.” Then review and update your contact information, especially telephone and email listings. If you have a mobile number listed in SOLAR, you will receive text and voice messages at that number. Please also review and update your emergency contacts.
Update: The Essential Travel Policy
The Essential Travel Policy has been modified, effective immediately:
- Divisional Vice Presidents will now approve domestic essential travel.
- International travel requires the President’s approval.
Prior approval must be obtained in the Essential Travel Application prior to submitting a Travel Authorization in eTravel and/or requesting foreign travel insurance. This includes ALL mileage and parking only trips. Upon receipt of approval, a Travel Authorization must be submitted with the approved application attached. eTravel approvers should not approve any travel without this attached.
The Essential Travel Application can take up to two (2) weeks to be processed. This is in addition to the usual processing timelines for international travel insurance applications: three (3) weeks for travels to non-high risk countries and eight (8) weeks to high-risk countries.
