CSUN Sustainability Plan Update | 2020 - 2021 Year In Review

Following are but a few of the accomplishments highlighted in the Annual Sustainability Plan Update which can be accessed at the below link. Please take some time to go through it and feel free to share it with your colleagues.

  • CSUN Launches a Sustainability Award as part of the annual Staff Service Awards.
  • We have made major leaps forward in our sourcing of sustainable and local food served in campus dinning – 69% of food was purchased from a local source and 100% of our seafood was considered sustainably sourced.
  • The Masters in Sustainability was officially approved by the CSU Board of Trustees and will begin in Fall 2022.
  • Approximately 65,331 forms were signed digitally in the 2020-2021 fiscal year - saving the equivalent of at least $112,000 in paper.
  • CSUN will be completing the Campus-Wide LED Lighting Upgrade Project towards the end of summer resulting in a savings of $1.2 million in annual electricity costs and over 2,000 metric tons of GHG each year.
  • In partnership with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, the Institute for Sustainability and Physical Plant Management, the campus now has a new 1/4-acre orchard that features a variety of 50 fruit trees.
  • By the end of August 2021, all outdoor waste bins will have been stationed in clusters of three at strategic locations, and wrapped to match the aesthetic and messaging of other zero waste bins across campus.
  • New smart water meters were installed in five locations and they were successful in detecting several water leaks or running plumbing fixtures. These alerts resulted in field investigations that lead to the issues being resolved.
