5 Ways to Celebrate World Environment Day | June 5

World Environment Day is an environmental awareness day created by the United Nations to bring to light specific issues facing the planet. This year's focus is on the fight against air pollution and takes place on Wednesday, June 5. Here are five fun and engaging ways to practice environmental awareness:

1. Opt Outside to Connect With Nature
Summer is on its way! The sun is shining, the grass is green, and the birds are chirping - which means it's the perfect time to spend time outside. Hike with friends (and pick up trash along the way), start your own small garden, or organize a community/beach clean-up.

2. Save Energy and Water
There are simple ways to practice mindfulness to help conserve resources at home and when you are out. Limit your shower to around five minutes, install low-flow faucets/shower heads, wash clothes with cold water, turn off the lights, and use energy-efficient light bulbs.

3. Reduce Plastic Use
There has been a great decrease in plastic use with the help of reusable straws, utensils, and bottles. Let's keep it going and stay active in refusing plastic bags at stores - instead, bring your own bag. Say no to single-use plastics, and avoid getting produce wrapped in plastic. Before buying anything with plastic packaging, ask yourself what happens when you're done with it.

4. Volunteer
CSUN has incredible volunteering opportunities that also help the environment. The Institute for Sustainability offers hours at the food garden where students and staff can learn to compost, care for a garden, harvest, and plant fruits and vegetables.

5. Pledge & Spread the Message
Even though World Environment Day only happens once a year, practicing healthy habits to limit the effects of human behavior on the planet can happen every day.

An important part of fighting against air pollution and other environmental issues is the use of social media to spread awareness. Make a video and post it online, or share your efforts in the fight against climate change. Advocate for change and lead informative conversations in classrooms, clubs, or other organizations.

On California's first Clean Air Day in October 2018, Californians took over 1 million actions to clear the air across the state. Everyone is invited to take the Clean Air Pledge and help clear the air. So far, over one million Californians have acted to clear the air.

Take your Clean Air Day pledge today!
