Disrupted Work Environment:

The university is committed to providing a safe environment for students, faculty and staff.

Situations occur due to local equipment malfunction or other conditions that render work space uninhabitable due to excessive levels of heat, cold, or smoke. The supervisor will make a decision relative to continuation of services at that location. If the supervisor, based on consultation with appropriate university officials; his/her knowledge of the duration and severity of the condition; and using a “reasonable person” standard, decides to vacate the work site, he/she shall use the following guidance:

  • If possible, services to students, faculty, staff and the public should be continued at an alternate work location within the college or vice presidential area. Supervisors should identify these alternate work locations in advance and advise staff of the location and the circumstances under which they would relocate (e.g., lack of heat, fumes, or threat to safety/security).

  • If space is not available in the alternate work area for all or some of the staff, consider relocating to public campus facilities (University Student Union, Sierra Center, or the Oviatt Library).

  • If possible, continue normal work activities at the alternate site. If computers, phones or other necessary equipment is unavailable, supervisors should engage staff in planning, evaluation or training activities.

  • If the above options are not feasible, the supervisor may authorize staff to work from home, or may authorize an alternate work schedule to make up time lost during the disruption.

  • If none of the above options are feasible, staff may be required to utilize paid leave (vacation) or unpaid leave during periods of disruption. It is the university’s intent that this option be considered only when all other options have been exhausted.

Supervisors are responsible for monitoring the condition of the original work site and for informing staff and faculty when they may safely return.
