- The make-up exam is scheduled for October 30th. Please do not come to class that day if you are not planning on making up the exam. If you choose to take the make-up exam, it will count for 100 points.

- Keep in mind that you should continue to post to the study guide and the TALK-301 group to ensure yourself a high grade in participation. One suggested topic for the TALK-301 group concerns the collaborative exam format. What did you think of it?

- Some people are still not signing their posts to HyperNews and the interactive study guide. Please remember to sign your name if you would like credit for your work. Also, please be sure to remember, when posting in smart text, never begin a line with a space or a tab. Begin each new line with a character. This is what is causing some lines to be printed in a different font or run across the screen.

- The following are some suggestions for papers. Please read these before turning in your next papers.
- Give your paper an interesting title that will get your reader's attention.
- Proofread your work before turning it in! If you have trouble with written grammar, spelling, or punctuation, please consult the writing center for instruction as soon as possible. Scholarly papers turned in in an academic setting should be free of grammatical errors and should use complete sentences.
- Remember that your essay should have a thesis, and the points you make in the essay should support that thesis. Do not simply turn in random thoughts about an article or issue. Outline your essay before writing it so that you have a clear sense of the structure of your argument.
- If you are writing an essay on the readings, be sure to use evidence from the text to support your thesis. Such evidence might include examples, quotations, or summaries of the author's argument.

- Be sure to look at some of the links on the Affirmative Action/CCRI Resources page. In the wake of the "Northridge Riot" this topic has heated up; think about whether the course materials have helped you make sense of these events, and post your reactions to TALK-301.

- Note on Hypernews: I have moved all of the articles in HyperNews to a different directory in order to facilitate your access to the web page. The old page had gotten to be several hundred thousand bytes long, which takes a long time to load, and the large size may have been responsible for some of the crashes you may have experienced while trying to post to HyperNews. If you want to browse messages posted before 27 September, go to the Old Hypernews Group. Please do not post any new messages to this page as they will not be read or evaluated. Direct future postings to the new page.

- New Discussion Group: TALK-301 (included in list above). Some students asked if there could be a separate HyperNews discussion group for unmoderated discussion. Use the Talk-301 group for this purpose. I will not require postings to this group, but they will help your participation grade should you choose to post here.

- Due Date Change: The Second HyperNews assignment originally had a scheduled due date of September 13. The new due date is now Sept. 20.

- The Panel Presentation schedule has been added to the syllabus. I have highlighted presentations in red for your convenience.
You can, if you wish, use Netscape's "Find" command to find your name and presentation date.

- Some students have been having trouble with HyperNews. Please be patient; occasionally the server
that HyperNews is connected to goes down. If this occurs, try again later. You may find it worth your while to
save your comments to disk in another program before posting them to HyperNews since it is difficult to save
your work in Netscape. Finally, be sure to sign your name on your posts! Put your name at the end of the post
just to be sure. Several students have posted without including their name, which makes it impossible for me to
give you credit for your work. If you have trouble posting to HyperNews and would like to practice posting, please
use the HyperNews Test Site.

- Interactive Study Guide: Very few have posted to the Interactive Study Guide so far. One student posted an outline of Conquergood's
essay, an excellent contribution. I strongly encourage other students to begin posting to the ISG as soon as possible. Not only will this be
extremely helpful to you in studying for the exams; it is also a requirement in and of itself. Please don't wait for me to assign postings to
this group as there will be no assigned postings. Your contributions are up to you.

- There have been some minor corrections to the class syllabus, last updated 03 September 1996.
In particular, the final project due date has been moved to December 4th, the day of the final class meeting. In addition, September
23rd and November 29th now correctly indicate that there will be no class meeting on those days.
