The Balzan Prize is awarded by a committee of twenty members, selected from among the various prestigeous learned societies of Europe. The foundation which controls the money was established by Angela Lina Balzan, the daughter of Eugenio Balzan, one time co-owner of the Corriere della Sera. Four awards are made each year, to persons outstanding for work in the Humanities, Natural Sciences, Culture, and Efforts for Peace and the Brotherhood of Man. The first award was given in 1961—to the Nobel Foundation. Pope John XXIII won the Peace Prize in 1962.
