Michele was founded by Tommaso Odescalchi, the nephew of Pope Innocent XI, in 1689, and extended by Innocent XII. As the Istituto Romano di San Michele, it came to comprise a work-house, a reformatory, a house of correction and a hospice for the poor. Msgr. G.-B. Mastai-Ferretti (Pius IX) was Director of the Ospizio from 1825-1827. It is now the property of the Italian State and houses the Istituto centrale del Restauro.
