Pope Benedict XV founded the Pontifical Oriental Institute on October 15, 1917 in a Motu Proprio entitled Orientis Catholici. The original home of the Institute was in the Palazzo Scossacavalli in the Borgo; it was destroyed in 1937 to make way for the Via della Conciliazione.
